Talks and Workshops

We are looking for local Bristol dance artists to join us on Saturday 28th July, between 10am – 12pm, for an ‘ideas testing’ workshop session at the University of Bristol. This could potentially lead to involvement in the prototype performance in September at the Wickham Theatre.

This event is part of a multi-disciplinary research project called Figuring: Exploring bodies, touch and materiality in multi-person virtual reality, led by dance artist and researcher Lisa May Thomas and molecular and computer Scientist Dr. David Glowacki.

The aim of the project is to take a dance perspective to investigate the convergence of physical, virtual and imagined worlds. Exploratory workshops have been conducted at Barbican Centre London, Knowle West Media Centre Bristol and Modern Art Oxford, as well as at the University of Bristol and Bath Spa University. The purpose of this ‘ideas testing’ workshop session is to gather feedback on some of the findings from these investigations so far.

Lisa is developing a fluid choreographic framework which will explore how physical experiences and choreographies are transferred or passed on as a form of distributed and embodied knowledge. Research with string figures will guide the development of this framework and will be used to investigate how they can be used to physically connect bodies which are simultaneously embedded in virtual spaces.

If you are interested in participating, please email the producer, Emma Hughes ( with a short statement about yourself and what interests you about being involved in the project. Please be aware that places for the workshop are limited.
